HISTORY
When Trieste was occupied by the Germans, there was a list of licensed brothels in the lobby of the train station.
Every alley, every street from Cavana to below the Capitoline hill of San Giusto, teemed with these corners of the world, where anyone could find some company, and maybe even some comfort.
In one of those houses in Cavana, along with the Bersagliera, La Francese and many others indulged a woman called La Muta, a physical defect that cost her her nickname.
La Muta's life has accompanied the change of a neighborhood that has gone from red light to one of Trieste's most beautiful and vital corners. It was in 2014 that she could still be seen around Cavana, perhaps sitting in some café sipping her coffee.
